Diversity in Britain - Responding to Change
The conference, held on the 9th October, was titled 'Diversity in Britain - Responding to Change' and gathered together expertise across the public and private sectors. Companies included B&Q, BT, ASDA, Barclays, the Metropolitan Police, Blackburn with Darwin Borough Council and Leicester Council. The aim was to discuss best practice around diversity and look at how best to implement the necessary changes. Issues and possible solutions were discussed around several themes, including an in-depth research report and findings conducted by MORI. This examined diversity from the employee point of view and found: 20% of people said they felt they had been discriminated against for using flexible working or for having domestic responsibilities27% of Asian people said equality and diversity policies were most important to them when looking for a job Nearly twice as many black people as the average, and more than a third as many disabled people believe discrimination exists in the workplace 55% of people asked said discrimination came from senior managers and 46% said it came from line managers The Presentations:Leadership and Diversity Management - Exploring how successful organisations lead change and support diversity from the top. The Business of Diversity - Looking at how diversity adds value to employers, customers, shareholders, business, and the community and how to manage these benefits. How to Communicate the Employee Brand - Exploring how organisations can best demonstrate and publicise the fact that they are embracing diversity. How to Measure the Impact of Diversity - The practical ways to measure and evaluate diversity programmes to order to understand what works. The Practical Implications of Forthcoming Diversity Legislation - The key areas and likely implications for employers, aiming to help them to prepare for the forthcoming legislation on sexual orientation, religion and belief, and age in employment and vocational training. Diversity in Performance and Service Delivery - How to implement diversity initiatives to improve the delivery of a service for both the benefit of the organisation and the customers it serves.The conference finished with Trevor Phillips, Chair for the Commission for Racial Equality, speaking about the positive impact of asylum seekers and how the road to true equality lies with diversity. The individualised approach - different actions are needed for different groups and individuals. And the final verdict from Michael and Annalie? "Overall it was a very good conference. We've brought back an increased understanding of how diversity fits into an organisation and better knowledge of how to promote diversity and why it needs to be promoted."
