Hundreds turn out for Young Jobseekers' Event

photo of Caroline Morgan at the Work Link standMore than 200 people braved the British weather to make the second Young Jobseekers’ Event at the Grand Central Leisure Complex a success, and to tell us their views on education, training and work. The day, aimed at young disabled jobseekers, was part of a government initiative through Stockport’s Joint Investment Plan "Welfare to Work for Disabled People." It was organised by Employment Services in conjunction with Connexions Stockport, and part funded by the European Social Fund.

Embracing Diversity staff were there to give a hand and tell people about the project at the Employment Services stand..

Among nearly 40 exhibitors were; The Community Team for people with Learning Disabilities, Stockport Disability Database, Stockport Quality Training, SMBC Human Resources, in conjunction with Embracing Diversity, and Work Link. Stockport Youth Services provided a video on young people's views about work, which ran all day in Brannigans.

Other attractions included non-alcoholic cocktails, DJ mixing and "Live Action" street entertainers. Stockport’s Community Radio Station – Pure Radio on 87.9FM – provided music and entertainment. The event was opened by the Worshipful the Mayor, Councillor Kenneth Holt, and Simon Timmins, the Stockport Young Citizen of the Year.
